Israel Election 2009:
Party Campaigns & Slogans

Barometric Check

In the 2009 snap election campaign in Israel, the three main party leaders or players have been fielding personal campaigns to highlight their leadership or integrity, pointing out the failings of their rivals, with various degrees of personal mud-slinging. However, these have largely been held over due to Oferet Metzukah (Cast Lead), the targeted Israeli air, land and sea attack on Gaza terror hotspots - in response to escalating mortar and grad attacks on Israel's southern cities, from the coast to the Negev capital of Beersheva. Elections are going ahead on schedule, in a whiplash campaign.

The reforming further left and right blocs, together with the established smaller parties, are focusing on detailed platforms, while also taking a stand for or against the military operation. The new and break-away parties  have worked out their main platforms and the daily party political broadcasts are heating up the pre-election atmosphere…

Media Usage

What is also notable in the big parties is that the messages have been extensively posted from personal blogs and Youtube to the media, while TV coverage and PR are more haphazard - of secondary concern – partially due to the early finishing line for the elections and cost-effectiveness: there is no time to create branding images now. Innovations include downloadable ringtones!
The newer blocs and smaller parties will have to get out there, too, especially the breakaway groups, if they want to mobilize their constituency…

Some information websites like Walla are covering the campaigns specifically, while others have article links from multiple sources – all in Hebrew. Channel 2 Israel TV is using youtube extensively for election updates and interviews. There is even a portal for coverage of all the surveys, which are obviously guiding the campaign planners on the whole. The campaign stickers will serve to reinforce existing messages, rather than set the tone. Satire on Barak and Netanyahu's egos in seeking re-election and public trust (Hebrew) have also been a new feature!

Initial Campaign Samples

Avoda/Labor

Labor's campaign has been enhanced by Ehud Barak's image as Minister of Defence during Operation Cast Lead (Oferet Yetzukah) in Gaza - Mr Security.

Israel needs a leader who is… experienced, trustworthy and astute… now, more than ever. Ehud Barak. A leader.
ישראל צריכה מנהיג ... מנוסה, אמין וחכם.... היום יותר מתמיד. אהוד ברק. מנהיג

Leadership isn't about being nice.
http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-3628371,00.html (Hebrew)

לבני: אשה ראויה שמוקפת עבריינים. ...קדימה זה אחורה.
נתניהו: הדרך הנכונה לעימות עם כל העולם.
עמוס עוז: סופר דגול - שכבר עשרים שנה במרצ.

Quotes:
Livni: A worthy person surrounded by criminals.
Kadima: Kadima (forwards) is backward
Netanyahu: The right way to get into conflict with the entire world
Amos Oz: A leading writer who has been in the Meretz party for 20 years.

On the party list, seen on public transport:
Hamsa Hamsa! – High Five! !  חמסא חמסא

Kadima

Ms Clean. Ethics in politics.
Kadima: What's good for the country. Leadership.
Likud is incapable of advancing the peace process.
Likud says 'no' to this, 'no' to that – what does it say 'yes' to?
It's the same old Likud – with the far right in the driving seat.

The ethical politics and particularly the anti-Netanyahu campaign are in full swing, with images of Netanyahu about to press the red button.

Hadash

Obviously Hadash.
The only Arab-Jewish, Jewish-Arab party. Together. Building a new left.
Two states for two peoples.

Likud

The Likud emphasizes the experience of Benjamin Netanyahu as its leader, speaks in the collective plural about acting together, and is using dynamic media to the limit, including offering downloadable ringtones.

Together we can do it! Because the country needs a leader!
יחד נצליח! כי צריך להנהיג מדינה!  www.netanyahu.org.il
Let the people decide!
Strong leadership for a strong country.
The Likud is the heart.
Likud with the Golan.
Tzipi (Livni) is not competent.

Meretz-New Movement

Don't compromise!

Meretz-the New Movement's campaign focuses on environmental and social issues: clean and extensive public transport 24/7; pension; social welfare.

The party is also promoting the viability of a larger, left-wing party to represent a wide range of social and political constituencies, rather than throwing away votes on smaller sectoral parties in the political arena - whether on green issues or social welfare. A strong corollary is a campaign to convince its potential supporters not to vote for Labor or other parties that might enter a right-wing coalition.

Shas

Yes we can [win 18 Knesset seats]! Eli Yishai.
We promise - we deliver - you can depend on us.
Protecting the home - protecting the country.

The campaign is bringing Shas' record of social legislation (pension, labor rights, etc.,) and improved employment statistics which reduce costs for social welfare.

Yisrael Beitenu

"To all (the Arab-Israelis) who wish to forgo their Israeli citizenship I say do it as soon as possible. If you are having doubts, we'll help you,"
"Those who want rights must also accept the obligations. Without national service there is no social security."
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3638473,00.html

The campaign is focusing on strategic threats to Israel: Iran, Hamas, etc.
